Benjamin Arthur has not taken long to make his mark at Celtic.

The 20-year-old arrived on loan from Brentford late in the winter window and had to bide his time, but when the chance came, he took it.

Thrown in from the start after Dane Murray pulled up in the warm-up against Aberdeen, Arthur handled it well. He picked up Player of the Match as Celtic came through 2-1, and he has not really looked back since.

Now in April, he is firmly in the conversation. Liam Scales and Auston Trusty have not got it all their own way anymore, and that is exactly what you want at this stage of the season.

There is another layer to Sunday’s trip to Dundee.

Stephen Pressley is in the opposing dugout, someone Arthur knows well from his time at Brentford, where the former Celtic defender worked closely with him as an Individual Player Development coach.

Arthur gave a glowing review when asked about him. He said (Record Sport):

“What’s better – his dress sense or his knowledge? Well, he’s a very well-dressed man! Let’s clear that one up.

“He’s well dressed but he’s also a very smart guy, so definitely his tactical knowledge is better. He knows a lot about the game, he’s had loads of experience.

“He was an IPD coach at Brentford so I had a very close relationship with him. I did a lot of work with him on and off the pitch. He did loads for me.”

Pressley clearly left an impression.

He has even compared Arthur to Virgil van Dijk in the past, which tells you the level of belief he has in the player. Big words, but Arthur is starting to show why he is rated.

The defender went on to explain just how much detail went into that relationship.

“As soon as I came to Brentford, he took me under his wing, he helped me learn a lot about communication, positioning. We went over every game for 30 minutes after it, going through clips, how I could learn, things I’ve done well.

“I’m really thankful for him. I’ll be very excited to see him. I saw him after my first game here. It was too soon for me to be involved but I caught up with him briefly.

“He had a great career, so for me it was learning as much as I could off him, taking things he would tell me day by day and just keep learning off him.”

There will be no room for catching up once the whistle goes.

Celtic lost at Dens Park earlier in the season. Different time, different personnel, but it still sits there.

Arthur has stepped in and raised the level in recent weeks. Sunday gives him and the rest of the back line a chance to show that was not a one-off, and to put that earlier result right at a crucial point in the run-in.
