Celtic’s search for defensive reinforcements appears to be moving forward, with fresh reports suggesting George Campbell would welcome the chance to move to Glasgow this summer. [Football Insider]

The West Brom defender has emerged as one of the names under consideration as Celtic prepare for a busy transfer window at the end of the season.

A new centre-half has felt like a priority for months.

Cameron Carter-Vickers’ injury issues exposed a lack of balance in the squad, especially on the right side of defence. Liam Scales and Auston Trusty are both naturally left-footed, while Dane Murray is still developing and Benjamin Arthur is expected to return to Brentford after his loan spell.

That has left Celtic repeatedly adjusting the back line depending on fitness and availability.

Campbell fits the profile of what the club appear to be looking for.

The 24-year-old is naturally right-sided, physically strong, and already has experience of a demanding season in the Championship. Despite West Brom struggling near the bottom end of the table for large parts of the campaign, Campbell was one of the few players to come through the season with credit.

He made 38 appearances and contributed four goals from defence, which is another part of his game Celtic would value given how often their centre-backs attack set pieces domestically.

CeltsAreHere previously exclusively revealed Celtic had explored the possibility of a summer move, with early discussions held around a fee in the region of £2.5million.

Now there appears to be encouragement from the player’s side too, with Champions League qualification reportedly holding appeal.

Interest in Campbell is not expected to come only from Scotland. Clubs in England and Germany are also believed to be monitoring his situation ahead of the transfer window, which could increase competition if Celtic decide to move formally.

There is also an interesting MLS connection.

Campbell previously played in North America and spent time at Montreal after Alistair Johnston departed for Celtic in 2022. Johnston’s success at Celtic Park has only strengthened the club’s confidence in that recruitment market.

A lot will still depend on who becomes Celtic’s permanent manager.

But regardless of who takes charge, fixing the balance in defence looks unavoidable heading into next season.
