Celtic could return to the table in January to sign Gvidas Gineitis.
Martin O’Neill is an admirer of the 22-year-old and is said to be unhappy that the transfer did not materialise.
The Hoops unveiled six new signings near the end of the window, taking their total to 10 for the summer.
Chelsea loanees Landon Emenalo and Shim Mheuka were not registered for the league phase squad for the Europa League, nor is permanent addition Joel van den Berg.
Oliver Sorensen, Jordan Lotomba and Sam Johnstone were all included alongside Camilo Duran, Kasper Hogh, Mika Baur and Haissem Hassan.
Several new names, but Gineitis could not be secured. The Lithuanian reportedly wasn’t willing to sign if he wasn’t involved in the European fixtures.
Though according to RecordSport, Celtic will keep close tabs on Gineitis and are expected to return in January in hopes of striking a move.
Should that happen, the timing would be key. If Celtic were to advance to the Europa League knockout phase, they can make up to three changes to their squad (after league phase proceedings finish on January 28). That would offer a potential pathway to any Gineitis deal, though nothing is concrete and as far as we know, Celtic’s interest has stopped after there was no breakthrough in negotiations.
O’Neill may continue to have his sights on Torino’s central midfielder, but for now, all focus is on the busy fixture schedule that awaits the Celts.
