JASON DENAYER’S contract at Lyon is coming to an end, running out on the 30th of June.

The former Celtic loan bhoy has been great in the French side’s back line since he joined in 2018 but has struggled for a starting spot this season. The Belgian is also a key international player, earning 35 caps for his country, which FIFA rank as the second-best international side in the world. In fact, he gained his senior cap while he was at Celtic.

Denayer previously played with Celtic during the 14/15, joining the Hoops on loan from Manchester City. He partnered Virgil Van Dijk under the management of Ronny Deila.

There’s no doubting that Denayer has developed since he was at Celtic, playing at a top level for club and country. When he arrived at Celtic, he was aged just 19.

During his season in Scotland, Denayer’s name was only written in the referee’s book once in the league. This showed how composed he was, showing his maturity.

He was confident with the ball at his feet, showing he had a wide range of passing. This would suit Ange’s demands for players to be comfortable in possession, as well as being strong defensively.

Becoming a free agent means that Celtic won’t have to fork out a transfer fee for the undoubtedly talented player.

He would add experience to the Celtic side, as most players are set to make their Champions League debut next season.

It’s an option Celtic should definitely explore; bringing the defender back to Celtic is a no brainer, especially if he’s available.

Denayer did reveal he treated Celtic like a stop gap once upon a time but now we’re in the Champions League — could the defender be tempted?
