CELTIC have announced the signing of young Daniel Kelly on his first professional deal.

The 16-year-old playmaker was being tracked by a number of big European clubs over the past year but the club has managed to convince Daniel Celtic Park is the best place for his development.

It can’t be underestimated Celtic managing to hold onto one of their top young players. We have had to watch some of our top prospects get poached by the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

Ben Doak to Liverpool looks all but done at this point unless there’s a massive change of heart. Signing Kelly to a three-year deal shows the club can offer something valuable to their emerging talent.

It’s something the club has to keep on working towards. We’re seeing European giants going into academies and poaching their top players before they’ve even kicked a ball for the first team.

Once upon a time, Celtic would have their pick of young players to come into the club and to keep at Lennoxtown. The bog boys used to just throw money at clubs to sign top players – they now look to sign these players for pennies and develop them further.

Celtic’s pathway to the first team has been mirky at best over the years. Timing can be everything rather than talent dictating how you get on.

We welcome the news today, it’s a statement signing for the club in many ways.
