Celtic midfielder James McCarthy seems to have fallen completely off the face of the earth over the past six months. The Irishman has not featured for the first team since Brendan Rodgers returned to the club.

The 33-year-old has had his fair share of injury issues but just last month, he featured for the B team.

When McCarthy initially joined the Hoops, it was questionable why he was handed a four-year contract. Such a decision remains equally as strange today given how little he has contributed on the park in his time at the club so far.

James McCarthy

It seems as though McCarthy is running down his deal, but the Hoops did recently reject a loan offer for him. According to Sky Sports, Greek Super League outfit Volos FC wanted to take the midfielder on loan until the end of the season. Celtic, however, rejected the offer because enough of the player’s wage wasn’t being covered.

Between now and the end of the window, it remains to be seen whether McCarthy will stay in Glasgow. He is picking up a useful wage every week without playing (he hasn’t featured since October 2022), but the temptation of game-time elsewhere could tempt him, one imagines.

  1. I am rarely so disheartened than after reading this. Even if that club gave us 50 drachmas a week it would at least get this fraud partly off our wage bill. This is insanity
