Celtic’s rearranged Scottish Premiership trip to St Johnstone will now take place on Wednesday, 9 September, adding another midweek fixture into an already packed early-season fixture schedule.

The game at McDiarmid Park will kick off at 8pm and will be shown live on Sky Sports.

It had originally been postponed because of Celtic’s involvement in the Champions League play-offs vs LASK, but the new date now leaves Martin O’Neill’s side facing a demanding run of domestic games across the opening two weeks of September.

The Hoops first face Falkirk at Celtic Park on Saturday before hosting Aberdeen on Wednesday, 2 September.

Celtic then travel to St Mirren three days later on Saturday, 5 September, before making the trip to Perth to face St Johnstone on the following Wednesday.

The rearranged fixture falls just four days before Celtic are due to play the Scottish League Cup quarter-final on Sunday, 13 September vs Rangers at Ibrox.

That means Celtic are set to play four domestic matches between 2 and 13 September alone.

Including Saturday’s meeting with Falkirk, O’Neill’s side will have five fixtures packed into a little over two weeks.

The St Johnstone game also arrives shortly before Celtic begin their Europa League league-phase campaign later in September following their Champions League play-off exit.

The schedule gives Celtic yet another reason to add squad depth before the transfer window shuts next Thursday.

O’Neill has already made clear that work still needs to be done in the squad, and the number of games coming in rapid succession will leave little room for injuries or fatigue.

Celtic host Aberdeen on 2 September, travel to St Mirren on 5 September and then head to McDiarmid Park four days later.

Another domestic cup fixture follows on 13 September, meaning rotation will likely become necessary as the Hoops balance league, cup and Europa League games.

The rearranged St Johnstone game is now firmly slotted into the middle of that run, with an 8pm kick-off confirmed for Wednesday, 9 September.
