Celtic will now weigh up a move for Fabian Schar after the Swiss defender was knocked out of the World Cup on Tuesday by Sweden.

Reports before the tournament suggested Celtic were seriously looking into bringing the player to Parkhead but would make no move for him while the defender was at the World Cup.

Schar, 26, has been tipped to leave his current side Deportivo La Coruna in the summer after relegation and has a number of club’s around Europe chasing his signature.

It’s not clear if Celtic are waiting to sort out the future of Dedryk Boyata before making any serious bid for the centre back, however with a reported £3.5million release clause it could be a no brainier for Brendan Rodgers.

Schar starred in Switzerland’s famous draw with Brazil earlier in the competition and went toe to toe with Neymar.

Celtic could do with some defensive reinforcements, fighting on four fronts this season from July onwards.Marvin Compper is yet to make an impact and Jozo Simunovic has fallen out of favour.
