This afternoon, an interesting report from France claimed Celtic had made an ‘initial approach’ for James Léa Siliki and unless you’re on social media pretending to know much about him you might be wondering who this guy is and why Celtic might be interested in him.

With the same report claiming Porto have already had an €8m bid rejected by Rennes for the player, you may also be wondering if Celtic’s interest will last more than an initial approach.

So who is James Léa Siliki? Here’s what the interweb tells us!

He’s 23-yeard-old, a central midfielder and has played with Rennes since 2017. He has three caps for France under 19s but has not been capped at any other level. He has made 72 appearances for Rennes and the highest calibre competition he has played in so far in his career is the Europa League. Contracted until 2021, Rennes don’t seem keen on selling the player.

The French club will travel to Glasgow this weekend to take on Celtic in a Friendly, perhaps they can drop him off if Celtic are really interested!

With regards to a fee, the club would have to back Neil Lennon big time but there could be scope to do so if Olivier Ntcham is moved on for over £10m. Porto are still looking for a central midfielder and if they lose out on James they may come calling for Olivier freeing up Celtic to go get James. A transfer triangle between Celtic, Rennes and Porto.

To spend that sort of money for a player, you have to be confident they can cut it when they come into the club.

Celtic have a summer intern Nicky Hammond as their head of recruitment, could he be driving some of these more ambitious type deals?

After Celtic fans researching an Ecuadorian target on Tuesday, we await Neil Lennon turning up to Celtic Park on Saturday and walking past James because he doesn’t know who he is!
