Former Celtic star Chris Sutton has dispelled the notion that Celtic needs to splash excessive cash to make their mark in the Champions League.

Recent criticisms have lambasted the club for their lack of spending

While the Hoops did invest in the squad in the summer, securing the talents of Gustaf Lagerbielke, Luis Palma, Odin Thiago Holm, and Maik Nawrocki, all for significant sums, their outlay pales in comparison to many of their Champions League competitors.

The spending of teams such as Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid, and Lazio considerably overshadows Celtic’s efforts. And with Brendan Rodgers’ squad facing early losses in the tournament, many are clamouring for the club to open its purse strings even wider.

However, Sutton believes that this isn’t the answer. He points to the prudent recruiting strategy of Ange Postecoglou in Glasgow as the path forward, cautioning that hefty signings could disrupt the structure at Parkhead.

Speaking to the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Sutton said; “At Spurs, Postecoglou will work within the parameters of the club like he did at Celtic.

“At Celtic there’s this notion that they should be buying because of the Champions League football, that they should be buying £20-25million players. That can’t happen.

“That would upset the whole balance of the club, the wage structure, you would have to pay a player on £25m something like £80,000 to £100,000. It’s the same at Tottenham.”
