CHRIS SUTTON has made the claim an argument could be made for Rodgers leaving Celtic in a worse state than Ronny Deila after the Norweigan’s two-year stint came to an end.

The former Celtic striker seems to be fighting his old teammate’s corner as Lennon takes the heat for Celtic’s flat end to the season.

The BT pundit does make some great points about Celtic not being at their best since the invincible season and there were problems before Brendan up sticks and left without warning.

Celtic’s defeat at Ibrox compounded the feeling that there’s a need for change, even though the club have won a double and are closing in on a treble treble.

This side looks knackered and in need of investment to keep going for the next two seasons and beyond.

While Lennon has made his own decisions, this is Brendan Rodgers side and we shouldn’t forget that. Here is what Sutton wrote in his RecordSport Column:

“Lennon is copping the flak for a stuttering end to the season but these people need to open their eyes. This hasn’t just happened in recent months – the rot had set in more than a year ago.

“Celtic already have more points than last season, so it’s not only this term. No one can deny Brendan Rodgers was an outstanding coach for Celtic and his success speaks for itself. You can’t argue with seven trophies on the spin.

“But he also allowed the club to regress over the last 12 months and has left a total mess for whoever is in charge to mop up in the summer.

“In fact, you could argue Celtic are in worse state now than when Rodgers came in on the back of Ronny Deila. There is an awful lot work required at the club but it’s extremely harsh to be aiming the negativity at Lennon.”

Do you agree with Chris Sutton?

  1. No Sutty, the biscuit tin mentality has always been, and always will be at the forefront since the days of Will Maley. That’s over a century of mismanagement
Things improved massively under The ‘ Bunnet ‘ And money was still ekk’d out wisely then.

The Martin O’Neil years was then spoilt for his supporters and fans worldwide by stingyness. And up and down yet again under Strapon, Neil Lennon, Ronny, Brendan and Neil again. And I thought Sutty knew our History.

With spend nil or little, sell for a massive profit. And the inabilty to hold onto a good manager and staff and players and move again forwards in European competion.

A ‘ If they wear it, and still buy season tickets and come in their droves’ Will always linger like a bad smells about Celtic Park in the next century.

  2. I do feel that Neil Lennon,is being unfairly criticised at times, but he has inherited this team, and it is in need of serious investment,to progress, and as Chris Sutton, rightly states,,we have not been anywhere as good this season.
