Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has hit out at the ‘strange’ appointment of new Dundee boss Mark McGhee ahead of the Dens Park sides trip to face Celtic this weekend.

The ex Motherwell and Aberdeen boss, who also had a spell with the Hoops during his playing career, was quickly brought in as new boss at the Dark Blues after the sacking of James McPake earlier in the week.

However, speaking on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra, Sutton has hit out at the appointment of McGhee, questioning why he was the man to be handed the role as his side prepare for their first outing under new management.

“It’s really odd, isn’t it. Does it feel right, Mark McGhee, Gordon’s mate, going in? In recent times he’s been to Barnet and Eastbourne Borough, has he really paid close attention to Scottish football? Does it matter?

“Well, maybe this season it does. Because Dundee are in a relegation battle, just the timing of the sacking, they beat Hearts away and had a decent win at Peterhead; I feel for James McPake, what an odd time to sack him.

“And then the six-game ban Mark McGhee has to sit out; you cannot tell me that is ideal for Dundee. There’s what, 12 games left, and he’s going to have to sit out half of them. It’s a very strange appointment. Jobs for the boys, isn’t it?”

When it was first announced that McGhee would be taking up the Dundee management role, it certainly did come as a surprise to many fans within Scottish Football, especially considering he still has a six-game ban to serve.

Of course, he now has a chance to show everyone who has been doubting this appointment why he can be the man to keep Dundee up this season, which could prove to be a challenging task down the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

He couldn’t really have asked for a much tougher start this weekend than a hurting Ange Postecoglou Celtic side, who are looking to sustain their lead at the top of the league going into Sunday.
