Chris Sutton has stepped into the debate over Brendan Rodgers’ Motherwell post-match interview comments.

Following Celtic’s 3-1 comeback victory over Motherwell, Rodgers’ interaction with BBC reporter Jane Lewis sparked controversy when he concluded the interview with “Are we done? Good girl,” a remark that has since drawn widespread attention on social media.

Sutton reacted to Rodgers’ words on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast. He recalled his own experiences interviewing Rodgers, noting, “I interviewed Brendan at the start of the season for Sky and on a couple of occasions he called me ‘lad’. That’s his terminology. If he didn’t use terminology like that I would understand where they’re going. But he’ll view it as a misstep.”

Further extending his commentary to X, Sutton addressed the accusations of casual sexism that have emerged in response to Rodgers’ comments. He stated, “It may have been a poor choice of words but there is a huge difference between that and casual sexism as some have suggested… what is the world coming to??” This tweet suggests Sutton believes the incident has been blown out of proportion and that Rodgers’ remark was more about his manner of speaking rather than an intention to demean.

I imagine Rodgers will regret his choice of words paired with his tone as he read this morning’s news. He’s an influential man in the west of Scotland and he must hold himself to a higher standard going forward.
