Chris Sutton has voiced his concerns over the current state of affairs at Celtic, a sentiment that resonates deeply with a significant section of the fan base.

In a candid social media statement, Sutton expressed, “Strange position Celtic find themselves in. Top of the league but there is a sense that things are simmering within a section of the fan base. We know why. Celtic seemed to have a plan with recruitment under Ange. Now it seems really complicated… and it shouldn’t be!”

Sutton’s comments hit at the core of the issue that has been bubbling under the surface at Parkhead. Under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, Celtic had embarked on a path that showed promise and strategic foresight in recruitment. The club brought in a host of impressive talents, shaping a team that not only won but entertained in equal measure, a style that Celtic fans have come to cherish and expect.

However, since Postecoglou’s departure last summer, there’s been a noticeable shift. The recruitment strategy, once lauded for its clarity and effectiveness, has now become a source of frustration. The club’s approach in the transfer market has been questioned, with many perceiving it as lacklustre, lacking the ambition and precision that marked previous windows.

The stark reality is that Celtic, while still leading the pack, are navigating through a season that feels underwhelming to many fans. The style of play, the excitement on the pitch, and the overall sense of progress seem to have taken a backseat. Brendan Rodgers, the current manager, has openly spoken about the need for quality reinforcements. His calls, however, seem to have fallen on deaf ears, with the club making a solitary signing in the form of Nicolas Kuhn this window.

With the January transfer window rapidly closing, the clock is ticking for Celtic to make the necessary additions to their squad. The fear among the supporters is palpable – without significant strengthening, the club risks not only their style of play but also the very tangible possibility of losing the league title. It’s a scenario that seemed unthinkable at the start of the season.

Sutton’s observations are more than just the musings of a former player. They are a reflection of a wider sense of unease that has gripped the Celtic faithful.

Can we come through this period unscathed?

  1. What the board doesn’t seem to realise is that this season going to the wire means only one thing…..

History has proven to us that the brotherhood in black will do ANYTHING to prevent us from winning the league against a team from ibrox……

  2. I hate to say it but it seems the re-introduction of Peter Lawell to the board has thrown Celtic backwards to the days of uncertainty. Are the board members keeping the purse strings tight in order to award themselves big fat bonuses. Ange was a fighter. Is Brendan strong enough against the powers that be

  3. Brendan for whatever reason seems to have become a puppet. Any signings now will be panicked ones with little time to bed in this season. Thoroughly brassed off, but this is Celtic the Lawwell way.

  4. Therein lies the problem Doug. Ange demanded new players while Rodgers pleads for them. He just goes along with the money men and won’t criticise them as he is friends with them. Desmond just wants more money for himself and must be the only billionaire owner in Britain who does not invest in players for his club . The only way to hurt these people is in the pocket. If they don’t back Rodgers in the January window then fans should stop buying merchandise and match tickets.

  5. I have a feeling that BR is working his ticket to get out of Celtic. He has us playing like a 3rd division side unable to hit the net with supposed stars, who can’t score a penalty even after two tries against a team second bottom of the league. Likewise, we can not place a cross in a goal-chance position. Time to look at what we have. Lawell and Lawell have shafted the fanbase while they coin in a nice little wage and laugh all the way to the bank.
Meanwhile, the transfers are STATIC, and the buns are laughing their head off! Get the Lawells OUT now!
