Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has backed the Hoops to go onto retain the Scottish Premiership title.

Despite eight wins and a draw in their last nine games, Brendan Rodgers’ side has come under heavy scrutiny.

The Bhoys’ draw against Aberdeen, in particular, drew criticism as they failed to wrap up a win in the first half despite creating a number of chances.

The Dons ultimately came out strong in the second half, with Bojan Miovski giving Aberdeen the lead in a match where it seemed unlikely, especially in the first 45 minutes, that Aberdeen would score, let alone secure a point.

On the other hand, Sutton believes that Celtic’s previous success in both Glasgow derbies this season gives them a slight edge in the title race.

Sutton said [Daily Record], “The general feeling is that Rangers are the team on the up with momentum and Celtic are going in the other direction, but this is dangerous territory. Clement’s team haven’t cracked it yet. Far from it.

“It only takes one bad result, one bad moment in a game, one dodgy decision or one red card and Celtic have the upper hand. Let’s not forget, Celtic have also played Rangers twice this season and beaten them twice.

“If they were playing each other today, I wouldn’t bet against Rodgers’ team winning again. In the big Old Firm moments, the champions have delivered.”

Sutton’s comments highlight his belief that despite dropping an eight-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership, Celtic still have the advantage in head-to-head games in Glasgow derbies, having won 1-0 at Ibrox and 2-1 at Celtic Park already this season.

With the Hoops in action today against Kilmarnock at 3pm, Brendan Rodgers’ side will be desperate to secure a win, especially after their defeat against the Ayrshire side in the reverse fixture at Rugby Park back in December.
