CHRISTOPHER DAUM has told SunSport he was offered the Celtic job back in 2014 and regrets hid decision not to pursue it.

The former Fenerbahçe, Bayer Leverkusen, Beşiktaş and Austria Wien manager claims he was approached to take on the job before Ronny Deila took the vacant spot left by Neil Lennon.

It appears everyone was contacted about the job that summer.

Dan Petrescu claimed he was close to taking the job the same summer as SunSport also reported on.

Roy Keane wrote in his auto biography he was told the job was his by Dermott Desmond but turned it down because he didn’t feel wanted enough at the club. You can read an excerpt of Keane’s book talking about the job offer in The Irish Independent.

This was Christopher Daum’s claim:

“It was a difficult time. I needed a little bit of a time out, a small break. I didn’t need another team.

“I got an offer from Celtic. I said no but it was a mistake.

“One of my big mistakes was that I never worked for Celtic or Rangers.

“I had just left Bursaspor in 2014 and I refused it. If you ask me now what I regret, this is it.”

Daum has been wheeled out as he used to manage Bayer Leverkusen who happen to be The Rangers opponents in the Europa League. It’s highly unlikely he was ever offered the job, same with Petrescu. Keane seems to be the outlier and at the time looked certain to be the next Celtic boss before he turned it down.

  1. If Keane took the job we wouldn’t be on the cusp of 9, of that I am sure. As Slippy is finding out, a great player doesn’t necessarily make a great manager and Keane has been a disaster. I breathed a massive sigh of relief when he knocked us back, surprised as I was. His ego is far too big to understand that at Celtic no one is bigger than the club.

    Horrible twat too.

  2. Roy Keane was not so keen on the job, at that time he was too busy chasing skirt, mostly barmaids. He still can’t shave though. Thanks Mr ‘Unc’ John McBride.
