CELTIC have been strengthening their weakened defence this summer after seeing a large number of departures in that area.

Emilio Izaguirre, Cristian Gamboa, Mikael Lustig, Jeremy Toljan, Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata have all left the club.

In their place so far is Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli with a deal for Hatem Abd Hamed soon to be wrapped up. Despite the incomings, Celtic will still need more defensive reinforcements before the window closes with an elusive right back the priority.

One thing the club would not have been expecting is interest in one of their current centre backs which could throw a spanner into the works.

SunSport reported over the weekend French club Lille were very much interested in Jozo Simunovic.

Since then, the Lille manager Christopher Galtier was asked about his interest in the Celtic defender, he didn’t confirm or deny interest but he certainly made sure people knew he was aware of the Croatian.

“He’s a very good player with a knowledge of European football.” Galtier told LA VDN.

Jozo Simunovic had a very strong finish to the season under Neil Lennon last term and helped the bhoys to a treble treble. The Celtic fans know how injury prone the player can be and if Lille were to offer a good amount of money for the defender, the club could be tempted.
