Former Celtic player and Sky Sports commentator Davie Provan isn’t shy with his opinion on Celtic usually but this week he’s chosen to go for the throat when it comes to Steven Gerrard and his side a week after they capitulated on their own turf.

Celtic went to Ibrox last Sunday and weren’t given a chance by most of the media, they had been written off and the home support were not only thinking a win was on the horizon but a convincing win. It was all going well then the whistle went for the start of the game – that’s usually when it starts going downhill for the boys in blue.

Celtic played their game plan to perfection, pressing the Ibrox team. Steven Gerrard tried to stifle Celtic by swamping the midfield and while Celtic didn’t have conventional control of the game, their work off the ball landed the first goal. Pressing high up the pitch – Connor Goldson had nowhere to go or any passes on when he decided to try and slide it through to a teammate; he passed it to Mikey Johnston who played in Odsonne Edouard and boom.

While the game would stay at 1-0 until the 93rd minute if you rewatch the game and take your nervous emotions out of it – they didn’t look like scoring and when Hayes scored it was the icing on the cake.

Provan believes the Ibrox club’s performance was ‘pathetic’.

“But Rangers’ pathetic performance was among the worst in the recent history of this fixture.” Provan Wrote in his SunSport column.

“Gerrard had two centre-backs who couldn’t make a forward pass, a clueless midfield and a striker playing in a different postcode to his team-mates.

“Carrying the weight of expectation for the first time, Gers crumbled.

“Early days, but the defeat leaves Gerrard one league loss from a crisis.”

The international break means we have to wait another week before the clubs are back in action but it will be interesting to see how both teams react to the Derby result.

  1. I just think the manager got it spot on and that is how to turn them over on there own pitch every thing Celtic players did was spot on,and any other teams managers should be watching that game and use that game as there blue print before they play them home or away…….

  2. To anybody who thinks Celtic did not strengthen significantly in that transfer window i would say this ; sorry but you’re talking out of your arse.
We have more talent and depth in the squad, and more adaptability and cover at the back. We went to Ibrox and done them up like a kipper.
People criticise Gerrard in my opinion (he’s certainly not above it,and sometimes deserves it like everybody else) but i firmly believe that NOBODY could do much better
    in the circumstances.
The crumbling infrastructure at their club will see to that.
The whole club is built on quicksand…the fans know, the media know it,their players must know ….they only survive by sheer defiance and moonbeams.
We’re setting sail into the distance and they are just driftwood.
    They will NEVER catch us.
