In the past, Celtic have been linked with a move for Motherwell defender Declan Gallagher.

A lot of the talk has been around the Scotland Internationals contract situation and whether the Hoops would be getting Gallagher on a cheap coming into the final months of his deal at Fir Park.

There have been some reports though that by playing 25 league games this season, an extension would be triggered keeping him at Motherwell for another year.

However, as quoted by the Daily Record that confusion has been cleared up today by Well boss Graham Alexander who suggested that there is no such clause and Gallagher is simply out of contract this summer and Alexander stressed that they could be priced out of keeping the 30-year old at the club.

“Declan is under contract until the summer, that’s what it is is, and after that, we take it from there.

“I think there was something at the start of the season that I wasn’t privy to and when I came in [as manager] it was about keeping him here until the summer and having another conversation with him – and that hasn’t changed.

“He is out of contract in the summer and he is free to play without that changing his future.”When the time is right, if he wants to have a conversation with us then we are open to doing that, but in January when I last spoke to him about this it was very much up in the air.

“When it gets to the summer we will see how it progresses from there.

“I’m an optimist but I’m a realist as well because I know he will have suitors.”

In the summer, the Hoops will certainly be looking to bring in defensive reinforcements with it being likely we will be left with only Christopher Jullien, Stephen Welsh and maybe Jack Hendry at the most.

Despite that, I am not sure that Gallagher should be a player we are looking to bring in and provide cover.

With the stage of his career, he is currently at, it may not be the best move for the club to make going into next season.
