Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart yesterday announced that he will be retiring from playing professional football at the end of the current season. The news came out of the blue, but one can’t deny that it was expected at some point.

At 36, Hart is no spring chicken. Although he does have a lot of life left in him, one cannot get away from his declining age and because his Celtic contract ends when the campaign finishes, retiring at such a juncture makes sense.

Several notable names from across the world of football have reacted to the news of Hart’s retirement. Current Hoops left-back Greg Taylor said that it’s time for the Englishman to end his career on a high while several stars including Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, and Gary Cahill wished him well.

Current Arsenal and England midfielder Declan Rice also sent a message to Hart. Posting on his Instagram story, Rice delivered some heartfelt words to the stopper: “One of the best people in the game”, he said.

“Cannot thank you enough for everything you have done for me mate. All the best in your next chapter. Love you brother”

Hart and Rice spent some time together at West Ham. The now Gunner was just coming through at the time and the ‘keeper was a leading influence in the team.

The same rings true at Celtic and when the current season comes to an end in May, the 36-year-old’s presence in and around the club and dressing room will be widely missed.
