Celtic don’t just want a manager in but also a director of football to oversee operations.

For the past two months, since Neil Lennon stepped down, we’ve been waiting patiently for the new structure to come into play.

Eddie Howe has continued to be the red hot favourite for the managerial role and Fergal Harkin has been the most touted potential DoF.

Michael Gannon of the Daily record has thrown a curve ball into the mix claiming while Harkin is still favourite, former Celtic scout Neil McGuinness, who’s credited with unearthing Virgil van Dijk is apparently in the frame.

Gannon writes:

“Fergal Harkin is the name attracting the most heat, with the Manchester City loan chief. The talk makes sense as Harkin has close ties with Celts from his previous role with Nike and he was involved in setting up deals for the likes of Jason Deneyer, John Guidetti, Patrick Roberts, Olivier Ntcham and Jeremie Frimpong.

“Other names bandied about include Juventus tranfer guru Matteo Tognozzi and ex-Spurs and Huddersfield recruitment man David Webb. An interesting one could also be former Celtic scout Neil McGuinness – who was behind unearthing Virgil van Dijk – who is currently head of recruitment at MLS champs Columbus Crew.”

McGuinness would seem too left field at the minute but until the position is filled, we obviously can’t rule anything out.

The talk about Richard Hughes coming to the club from Bournemouth could still happen under an Eddie Howe appointment BUT Gannon writes that would be more of a scouting position than a DoF.

It’s becoming really frustrating that our club continue to drag their feet getting their new team installed.

We have three months until our first Champions League qualifier and unless we act, we’re going to fail miserably when the time comes.
