Former Celtic player and assistant manager John Collins has criticised the decision to start left-back Diego Laxalt in Sunday’s derby defeat.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Collins admitted he was shocked to see the Uruguayan start at left-back in the defeat to Rangers yesterday and thought his display showed exactly why he shouldn’t have.

“Laxalt has been a shocking signing. How he played yesterday I’ll never know.

“His recovery runs, his effort at tackles, his blocks, he was a weakness that Rangers exploited on the right-hand side as soon as they saw the teamsheet.

“Watch the first goal. Watch the recovery run of [David] Turnbull and Laxalt. The referee runs past Turnbull, Laxalt’s jogging back, that’s why Celtic have had the season they’ve had.”

There weren’t too many surprises when it came to the Celtic side that was released at 1:45 PM yesterday.

The one that may have surprised Hoops fans a little was Laxalt starting at full-back ahead of Greg Taylor.

Of course, that decision proved to be crucial with the defender arguably playing a part in two very disappointing goals conceded against our Glasgow Rivals.

At this stage, it would be very surprising to see the club attempt to sign the on-loan AC Milan player, in what has been an extremely disappointing campaign for Laxalt and the club as a whole.
