It has been a large talking point over the past week on what punishment should be handed to a player if they break new COVID rules during the season.

Boli Bolingoli and the Aberdeen Eight are all on the hook for breaking rules but the punishments are only now being discussed with nothing in place. Amazingly, the club’s themselves have been reprimanded and face their own punishment for their players discretions.

At the weekend, rent a quote, Kris Boyd explained in SunSport, Celtic and Aberdeen should be docked points in his complete and unbiased opinion [Aye, right].

The notion that a points penalty should come into it, by a pundit who was trying to shout for sporting integrity only a few months back is laughable.

Former Celtic player and Sky Sports pundit, Davie Provan has laughed off the suggestion of a points deduction – branding it ‘daft in his SunSport column.

“Spare me the idea Celtic should sack him. Why would Peter Lawwell empty Bolingoli when he can get decent money for the 25-year-old?

“Equally daft is the suggestion clubs should forfeit points if they’re responsible for a game being called off. Why would you punish players who are following the guidelines because of one who can’t?

“St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin had a better solution. A lengthy suspension for guilty individuals makes more sense. If a player deliberately ignores the Covid-19 restrictions, he should be fined and banned.”

Player punishments are more fitting for anyone caught flouting the rules. Celtic have been following the rules religiously and because of one rogue player they face a club-wide punishment – it doesn’t compute.

We hope the SPFL see sense and will see first hand Celtic are doing the utmost to make sure their players are safe and that the season can continue.

As for asking for points to be deducted, it’s the sign of desperation and we’re only a few games into the new season.
