Former Celtic defender who was signed under Neil Lennon during the Irishman’s first run as Celtic boss has come back to football, three-years after retiring.

Kelvin Wilson played for Celtic between 2011-2013 where he played in the famous beating of Barcelona at Celtic Park on the 125th anniversary of the club.

Wilson left Celtic prematurely down to family reasons but the club did get a fee for him when the Englishman went back down south to re-sign for Nottingham Forest.

Having retired three years ago, the player has been brought back to the game in a player/coach role with non-league side Ilkeston Town.

Just like his Celtic career, Kelvin’s football career seemed to end prematurely also – retiring at 31. At 24, you have to imagine he can still play to a decent level and will no doubt bring a lot to the table at his non-league side.

Speaking about his return to football, the Ex-Celtic defender is excited to be back:

“I’ve been retired for three years now and I’m hungry to get involved now. I’m excited to be a part of this.” Wilson told RecordSport.

“People might say it’s not the level I should be at, but this suits me to a tee. It’s the perfect start for me in coaching.

“When I first finished playing, I was bitter and didn’t want to talk about football. But I’ve watched a lot of it recently and I’ve actually surprised myself by how much I can give back to football.

“In terms of managers I have learned from, Neil Lennon was brilliant in giving you confidence.

“I remember when I signed for Celtic I had a nightmare first season – I had a lot of injuries and we lost a game against Rangers when two of the goals we conceded were my fault so I was getting pelters from the fans and press.

“I didn’t want to be there in the second season and I wanted to come back down south, but the confidence Neil had in me made me stay.

“We played Real Madrid in Philadelphia in a pre-season game in what was probably one of the best games I’ve ever played and although we lost, he made me feel like I was the best player in the world.

“I know what it’s like to be given confidence and I want to give that back to the players here too.”
