Hatem Elhamed is set for a Celtic exit just a month after his agent released a statement saying he wanted to stay and fight for his place at the club.
Rumours of the player being homesick have been around for months but Dudu Dahan made it clear Elhamed was focused on Celtic.
Now, tonight, Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed the player is on his way back to Israel with a fee agreed for his services.
“A fee’s been agreed. I’m not sure it’s been finalised yet.” Lennon told RecordSport.
“He’s really struggled with life here, his wife and young son are back in Israel and he’s been through a really rough time of it mentally rather than anything else.
“So I think for his wellbeing he really wanted to go home, so that deal’s going to come to fruition, I think, either today or tomorrow.”
We understand it’s always been on the cards that Elhamed would leave. However, the club were unhappy that it was made common knowledge that the player wanted a move back home which would hamper any negotiation powers they had.
Elhamed had some good games for Celtic but he never set the world alight due to injury and other factors. It can’t be easy for a player coming to a new country without his family and the pandemic has made him more isolated. We wish him all the best.
Sorry it didn’t work out here. Look after your family against the odds when you get home.
A class act last season but got hampered by injury v Lazio away as I recall and never really looked the same player again.
All the best
