Former Celtic academy defender Jamie McCart endured a nightmare at Tynecastle on Sunday, scoring two own goals to gift Rangers a 3-1 victory over Hearts. The ex-Celt handed Philippe Clement’s side an unlikely three points in a match where they were far from convincing.
McCart, who came through Celtic’s youth ranks but never made a senior appearance, twice put the ball into his own net, ensuring Rangers kept up the illusion of a title race—at least mathematically. The win, however, does little to shake Celtic’s commanding position at the top of the SPFL table, with Brendan Rodgers’ men maintaining a 13-point lead.
The player joined the club as a youngster in 2012 and spent seven years at Celtic before being released in 2019.
It was a frustrating afternoon for Hearts, who had looked the better side for large spells but were undone by misfortune. Rangers, for their part, were sluggish and lacking ideas, but McCart’s misadventures meant they didn’t have to do much to leave Edinburgh with the points.
For Celtic fans, there was an ironic twist to the result. While Rangers struggled to create anything of note, it was a former Hoops youngster who ultimately did their work for them. As things stand, Rodgers’ side remain firmly in control of the league, with the finishing line beginning to come into view.
