Former Celtic defender Jack Hendry appeared in the Champions League knockout stages last night for Club Brugge.

The Belgian side were beaten 2-0 at home by Portuguese league leaders Benfica but many were surprised to see them make the Last 16 having gotten out a group containing Bayer Leverkusen, Porto and Atletico Madrid.

They will travel to Lisbon in two weeks time for the return leg but now have a mountain to climb.

For the first part of the season, the Scotland international spent time in Serie A at Cremonese but returned to his parent club at the end of January having made only a small number of appearances for the Italian side.

Since heading back to Belgium, he has started Brugge’s last three matches as former Hoops defender Dedryck Boyata has been left on the bench [Transfermarkt].

It’s contrasting fortunes to see the much maligned 27-year-old feature in the competition having taken such criticism during his time in Glasgow.

Hendry made the move from Dundee to Glasgow having been signed by Brendan Rodgers but didn’t feature too often and had a few suspect moments.

Since departing Celtic permanently he has made a decent career for himself by playing in some decent leagues in European football and becoming an established international under Steve Clarke.
