Giorgos Giakoumakis had admitted that he is yet to receive his trophy for finishing joint top goal scorer in the SPFL Premiership last season.

There is real healthy competition within the dressing room at Celtic Park at the moment with both Kyogo and Giakoumakis setting their sights on a starting place in the first team for the campaign about to come.

Both men were on the scoresheet on Wednesday evening as Celtic dispatched Banik Ostrava in their centenary match 4-2.

With Kyogo having already declared publicly his intention to finish at the top of the goalscoring charts, Giakoumakis has also had something to say.

His contribution to the team in the second part of last season was huge as he scored some big goals and put in top performances along the way. The reward for this culminated in Celtic winning the league and gaining direct entry into the Champions League group stages.

The Greek striker has previously experienced the competition with AEK Athens and is relishing the opportunity to play in it again.

“I will always try to make an impact whatever I play in. I try to change my level, I try to push myself, to improve myself a lot”, said Giorgos Giakoumakis speaking to the Daily Record.

“The Champions League is something amazing, the best league that a player can play in within the European game. It makes me feel like we are at the top level.”

During the break Giakoumakis received a heroes welcome home when he returned to Greece with the 27-year old being honoured for his footballing exploits as his Grandfather presented him with his award.

“It was really emotional. My grandfather is very old, he is 94 years old.

“He is always proud. They always want you to have success in your life. Your grandfather, your father, your family, they already feel proud no matter what you do in your life.

“So even more when you are a successful football player and he always loved football. So it was a special day for me that I will always remember.

“They just gave me an honour because it is my village. It is where I come from and they had a big festival, a big party. We also had some musicians.

“It was something amazing. They just gave me this trophy in order to give me an honour.”

However, Giakoumakis still has space in his cabinet for another trophy which he is still waiting to receive.

“First of all, I’m still waiting for my trophy”, said Giorgos Giakoumakis

“Where’s my trophy? Maybe they lost it, I don’t know! We will see. It suits the strikers who have better chances to score.

“That’s one of my main targets this year – to score as many as possible. Why not be the top scorer in the league? Alone.”

The striker was utterly superb last season and the thought of having both him and Kyogo fit for all of the season is exciting but may come with a danger warning to defenders across the country.
