It was in the summer when Celtic were going all out for a goalkeeper that David Marshall’s name came up.

Rumours were awash on social media that the former Celtic youth graduate was back on the club’s radar.

Fraser Forster had decided not to return for another loan spell while Craig Gordon refused to sign a new lower contract.

It left just Scott Bain as number one. It wasn’t long before Celtic brought in Vasilis Barkas and ended the hunt for a stopper.

Asked about the speculation in the summer by the Scottish Sun, Marshall said: “I spoke to Terry Gennoe not that long ago, he only stays about an hour from me in Derby. Woodsy has been great (for his development). I think it was Terry who brought Woodsy into Celtic and I have always got on great with him.

“A return to Celtic was never close. I joined Derby, signed for a couple of years and I am really delighted with that.”

So rumours were wide of the mark for the Scotland goalkeeper.

Barkas has struggled so far in his short Celtic career. The player has been benched for the past four games and is looking to reclaim the number one spot. There’s a portion of the fan base already writing him off but we must hope and give him the time to come good.

Celtic kick off against Hibernian a week on Saturday; it will be interesting to see who Neil Lennon chooses.
