Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has tore into players of his old club, claiming not even Pep Guardiola could improve them.

It comes after the Hoops threw away two crucial points in the Scottish Premiership title race on Saturday. 1-0 up through Kyogo going into the latter stages, it looked as though The Bhoys would see it out.

David Watson had other ideas, though. The teenager nodded home at the back post as the champions failed to see out another one-goal lead.

McAvannie has now questioned their bottle. Speaking on Monday outside Parkhead with PLZ Soccer, the 64-year-old scathed the current squad.

The player-turned-pundit made some shocking claims about their ability and mettle: “Pep (Guardiola) is supposed to be the best manager in the world – he couldn’t make that team better”, he said.

“It’s all about confidence. It’s alright when you’re winning, but grow a set, stand up and be counted because if you’re looking at Kilmarnock and saying they’re individually better than you, then that’s not right for Celtic.”

Known for his sheer honesty as a pundit, McAvennie has refused to hold his true feelings in. He is incensed by current ongoings at Celtic, as are many fans.

Supporters can see the title slipping away before their eyes, but there are a host of games yet to be played. Things can change rapidly in football, but at Celtic, the current signs of the way things are going aren’t entirely encouraging.
