Ibrox boss Michael Beale has gone an astonishing rant aimed at former Celtic striker and BT Pundit Chris Sutton – declaring him a comedy act while making a point of not saying his name.
Sutton praised Beale for allowing Partick Thistle to equalise after his player Malik Tillman scored a very sketchy goal that flew in the face of sportsmanship.
The former Celtic striker Sutton did question if Beale would have done the same thing if it had happened in a Glasgow Derby. When that hypothetical was thrown at Beale today, the Englishman went on an incredible rant.
Beale told Football Scotland: “Listen, there are pundits that are comedy acts. There are ex-players who are comedy acts.
“I don’t even want to answer that question because they are comedy acts and they are there to create intrigue. They don’t speak about the betterment of the game, they don’t help our game at all.
“All they do is bring it back down to the gutter. There are a lot of good things we can speak about in our game at the moment, at other clubs as much as in my club.
“I don’t know why people… Why is that where they go? At the end of the day, we don’t know, do we
“If I had allowed that goal to stand and we had gone through in the cup like that, what would that have done for Malik? What would that have said about me and our club?
“And also, it seems like because Partick Thistle said it, that Ian McCall was getting the sack anyway. Then you guys would be questioning me that I took a goal from someone that lost his job.
“I think that day worked out about as well as it could have done when that situation happened.
“You see when people do that, I think we need to wise up in this country. There are people out there creating intrigue for intrigue reasons and those people, in my opinion, we need to mute them and quickly.”
Up until this point in the rant, you’d be forgiven if you thought he was describing Kris Boyd and his style of punditry. It was the final part that brought it home he was talking about Sutton and it would appear like the big man lives rent free in Beale’s head.
“Growing up, I was a fan of Chelsea. So there is one pundit around here who is the worst ever player to play for Chelsea. That is why I won’t mention his name because I try to forget him.”
Chris Sutton flopped at Chelsea after winning the EPL title with Blackburn. However, his time at Chelsea would be the pre-cursor for his move to Celtic where he would stroll into Glasgow and help put Rangers in their place in his debut season in Hoops. Sutton was part of the team who done a clean sweep under Martin O’Neill. The first treble since Stein. The former Celtic striker also scored two goals the day the bhoys thrashed Rangers 6-2.
I’m sure Chris will be tickled by Beale’s Chelsea critique. Very unprofessional from the Ibrox boss who has done nothing but shoot his mouth off since he got here while Celtic have maintained their nine point lead and widened the goal difference gap.
No question he has had a dream start. But, maybe I am wrong, and that would hardly be a first, but I have a feeling that this guy is fragile. He has faced no challenge so far, he was under no pressure, no one expected him to do anything. When the wobble comes, and it will, we will see him for what he really is. Seems a wee bit edgy. Drop a couple of points and lose a couple and this guys bottle may go. Look at his last few games at QPR. I think they lost quite a few games. He will be fine as long as things are going well but that is easy. The media has been right behind him since day one. Compare that to Ange. Ridiculed from day one, elderly dementia tosspots like Keevins making up acronyms about his name. So called Celtic men mocking his name never mind his credentials and ability. Then 3 defeats and a draw in his first 7 games. No panic, clarity and purpose. Let’s see wee Mikey after a few defeats. he looks like he will be doing a Kevin Keegan on STV. Not tested yet.
