The summer signing of Nat Philips by Celtic on a six-month loan deal was an emergency singing, with Carter-Vickers, Nawrocki and Welsh all injured, and Liam Scales yet to have his breakthrough that he’s had in the last few weeks.

With a potential reassessment in January that could see Philip’s stay extended, all signs pointed to Philips securing his role in the Hoops’ backline. But football, as we often find, writes its own script.

Enter Liam Scales.

Few could have predicted the meteoric rise of this young Irish defender, least of all in the face of established competition like Philips. But Saturday’s match, which saw Scales partner with Carter-Vickers from the start, underscored a transformation that has been a few months in the making. Philips, once the talk of the transfer window, found himself coming off the bench to replace the American international.

What’s particularly intriguing about Scales’ ascent is how he has not just risen to the occasion but has indeed managed to surprise everyone – fans, pundits, and even Brendan Rodgers. The Celtic manager has heaped praise on Scales. It’s clear that the defender’s performances have exceeded all expectations.

Scales’ strengths lie in his reading of the game, his anticipation, comfort on the ball, and his composure under pressure – assets that are crucial in the high-stakes environment of the Scottish Premiership.

Notably, the Irishman started alongside Carter-Vickers at the weekend, with Nat Philips dropping to the bench.

Given this scenario, one can’t help but speculate about Philips’ future at Celtic Park. With the January window looming, will the Hoops see enough merit in extending his stay? While Philips is undoubtedly a talented player with much to offer, the breakthrough performances from Scales make it a complex decision.

Celtic will also have Nawrocki and Welsh back in the next few months, with their injury crisis at the back looking to come to an end.

As of now, the starting jersey is draped over Liam Scales’ shoulders. It’s a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and undeniable talent.

Fair play to the defender, who, I think, will be the reason that Nat Philips is sent back to Merseyside in January.
