Celtic winger Jota has expressed his emotional response to seeing his iconic fist-to-the-air celebration being replicated by young players in his homeland of Portugal.

The celebration, which has become a signature move for Jota, was first seen after he scored a stunning chip in Celtic’s 4-0 victory over Rangers in September. The celebration was repeated after he scored the third goal in Celtic’s 3-2 derby win last month.

The celebration has not only been adopted by players in the lower leagues of Scottish football but has also made its way to Portugal, specifically to the youth academy of Benfica, the club Jota supported and played for as a youngster.

Speaking on the latest Celtic View Podcast, Jota shared, “A funny story is that I received some videos from Portugal of the Benfica youth academy. Some kids were doing the exact same thing [celebration]. So like under 10s and under 12s. I was just amazed. I get emotional at these kind of things because I was at Benfica for 15 years and to see these young lads doing this kind of stuff is… wow.”

Jota’s emotional response reflects his deep connection to his roots and his appreciation for the impact he’s having on the next generation of footballers. “It seems like they are watching what I am doing and my heart was full of love because of that,” he added.

Jota’s journey from Benfica to Celtic has been a story of growth and realisation of potential. His success at Celtic has not only made him a beloved figure in Glasgow but has also kept those back in his homeland engaged in what he’s doing in Glasgow.

Looking ahead, Jota could potentially face his boyhood club next season in the UEFA Champions League. Both Celtic and Benfica have secured their places in the group stage, setting the stage for a potential reunion that would undoubtedly be an emotional moment for Jota.
