Scottish Football has been copying some soap operas for the past few weeks in what has become a very public cringy gut swirling embarrassment. A war of statements took over from any mature rational logical pathway into resolutions. Instead, we have had weeks of your parents fighting with the windows open while all your neighbours have a good laugh.

Thank god Celtic have stayed well clear and let the rest of them at it. One chief instigator in the war of statements was Hearts owner Ann Budge. I’ve said from the start that Hearts had a point, they were in a dog fight to survive the drop and they had a chance of surviving. The top of the table was the complete opposite though.

The Hearts owner hardly covered herself in any glory but somehow the SPFL saw it fit to make her the head of the Reconstruction Task Force. Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has Record column this morning to take aim at Budge and her many faces.

“Ann Budge was very specific about a three-week target when she took up a role at the head of the Reconstruction Task Force. No wonder she was so interested in timings. The Hearts owner has more faces than Big Ben when it comes to sporting integrity.”

Sutton goes on to point out the double standards from Budge:

“One minute Budge is ripping into the SPFL over the unfairness of a vote to send her club down and screaming about legal action. Next minute, she’s shoehorned into the very group which is supposed to be, in a completely impartial manner, finding a new set-up to redesign the leagues. Designed to keep Hearts up more like.”

It is amazing that nobody else is questioning this SPFL decision. A person who is screaming about legal action suddenly gets put in charge of fixing the thing she is screaming about?

The ex-Celt wasn’t finished there as he pointed out more double standards:

“Budge wanted 38 games played for sporting integrity. If reconstruction goes through and Hearts are saved after 30 games are played, then she can’t class that as integrity. Will she still be pushing for all 38 games to be concluded if reconstruction salvation is placed on the table to sign? No, I don’t think so, either.”

Everyone wants this worldwide pandemic over for bigger reasons than just football but it would be nice to see an end to the embarrassment that Scottish football has plunged into the last few weeks. Wishful thinking.

  1. I like Chris, but his analogy here doesn’t work. Not being pedantic but Big Ben doesn’t have any faces as it’s the name of the bell within Westminster Clock Tower. just saying. But aye, she is a sleekit one for sure.
