SPFL Chief Neil Doncaster has released a statement alongside Ian Maxwell, the Scottish SFA Chief executive after postponing the Scottish game entirely on Friday afternoon.

All of Thursday was spent telling supporters games would go ahead as planned but by this morning, it looked less and less likely this was a position they could hold for much longer.

With the prospect of 50,000 in attendance at Ibrox on Sunday and thousands in pubs up and down Scotland to watch the game, they had no choice but to postpone the season until further notice.

This is unchartered waters for football and sport in general. The spread of the Covid-19 virus has meant that many events around the globe have been cancelled or postponed.

Up until this week, we’ve seen some games played behind closed doors but even that wasn’t sustainable when players were being diagnosed with the virus.

Published on the SFA Website, Doncaster released this statement:

“As everyone knows, this is a fast-moving and unprecedented situation for the entire country. We have been in intensive and detailed discussions since last night and have also been taking on board the experience of our counterparts in England and across Europe. As a result, the board of the SPFL has agreed this morning that all league fixtures this weekend and next midweek will be postponed until further notice.

“The health and safety of fans, players and officials is absolutely paramount. We have not yet had any confirmed cases of Coronavirus amongst players in Scotland, but, given the nature of this outbreak, it seems only a matter of time. We realise that many people will be bitterly disappointed, and we would obviously prefer to be in a position where we can continue as normal, but that’s neither realistic nor possible.”
