LEE O’Connor put in a top performance for Ireland under 21s on Thursday and earned praise for his contributions to the team after being called up after his Celtic move.

However, it has been a disastrous night for the young lad and the whole Irish under 21 side as they fell to a 1-0 defeat in Iceland and Lee was sent off at the death.

The Celtic youngster was sent off for his second bookable offence of the afternoon.

O’Connor joins Conor Hazard in another Celt who has been sent off for his country this week.

It will be a blow for the former Manchester Utd youngster who was riding a wave of positivity after the Italy game.

The team have come back down to earth with a bang after the result in Iceland didn’t go their way.

Ireland still remain top of their group but Iceland’s visitors puts them to within a point of first place. Lee will return to Celtic now and hopefully take some positives from his week and a half away with the international side.
