ANGE POSTECOGLOU spoke to the media on Tuesday evening ahead of Celtic’s tie against Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland. One thing that came up during the short conference was Oliver Abildgaard.

Ange was asked if the role of a defensive mid changes depending on who plays the position or what competition they’re in. The Australian was clear the role doesn’t really change but the different attributes of who he puts in that position will change how the position is played to a certain extent.

Callum McGregor plays the position more often than not but Mooy has had some game time sitting back in the holding role.

Ange then revealed Oliver Abildgaard’s current squad status after his deadline day move to the club.

“Obviously we brought Oliver in, but he’s not at the levels of fitness we need to put him in, but when he does, he’ll bring his own qualities.” Ange told Celtic TV.

It’s clear Oli is unlikely to be part of the matchday squad on Wednesday. The supporters who are waiting to see what he can do will have to wait a little longer. It’s probably not the best idea to hand someone their debut in an away Champions league tie anyway. There are plenty of games ahead where the midfielder can come in and make an impact.

Ange will not throw players into the mix if he feels they’re not up to fitness in the way he wants to play. It’s understandable.
