PETER LAWWELL is the reported front runner to become the new Chairman of Celtic football club.

According to the The print edition of the Scottish Daily Mail, the former Celtic chief executive is at the top of the list to become Ian Bankier’s replacement.

The story has now been followed up by Football Scotland, however, nobody else is claiming ownership of the story at this point.

The Daily Mail got plenty of scoops when Peter Lawwell was the man in charge at Celtic, it’s possible they’ve been tipped of from a very well placed source.

Running in Celtic circles, you hear all sorts of stories that don’t come to fruition. But there are many stories that do eventually show themselves to be true, there has been whispers of a Lawwell return in the Celtic rumour mill for the past six months.

Celtic are a PLC and they must do their due diligence when selecting a new chairman. There is no doubting Dermot Desmond’s admiration for Peter Lawwell and the Irish billionaire would no doubt like to work with Peter again.

Hoops fans could be split on this kind of appointment. Peter had his time at the club and a move into chairman would be seen as heading back into the Lawwell era.

Some fans might quite like to see the former chief back. It’s all resembling shady politics and cabinet reshuffling.

The board like to hire within, while Peter isn’t technically within, he still has the ear of the people who help run the club.

If Peter does return, he would join his son Mark who was brought to the club this summer from the City Group.
