Rennes marquee signing from AC Milan is now a huge doubt for the French sides Europa League opener on Thursday.

Mbaye Niang missed Rennes game with Brest over the weekend which ended in a goalless draw. As they now switch their focus to Celtic, the striker is still struggling according to Rennes boss Julien Stephan.

“Mbaye got a blow to his knee in training this week and that was enough to keep him out of the game.” He told SunSport.

“As for Celtic, it’s just a case of monitoring him on a day-to-day basis to see if he has a chance of being fit for the match this week.”

The frontman has scored two goals in four games so far for his club this season with Rennes finding ammunition from elsewhere.

They will certainly still be a daunting prospect on their home turf and it’ll be up to Celtic and Neil Lennon to go there with a game plan.

The club missed out on the Champions League football but the Europa League provides a genuine rest for Celtic against teams the club should be able to be competitive with.

Celtic go into the game with a strong team, although Mikey Johnston won’t be available.
