Liverpool centre-back Nathaniel Phillips has agreed to join Celtic on loan from Liverpool, according to The Athletic. The Englishman will sign for the Hoops on an initial six-month loan deal before the arrangement is re-assessed in January.

With Celtic in desperate need of cover at centre-back amid injuries to trio Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maik Nawrocki, and Stephen Welsh and Phillips eager for minutes, this is a deal that makes sense for all parties.

As well as this, the Scottish champions bringing the 26-year-old in initially until January makes great sense after what happened with Moritz Jenz last season. The German defender signed a season-long loan deal at Parkhead but that was cut short in January after he was deemed surplus to requirements.

Jenz, though, did play a pivotal part in the Bhoys’ 2022/23 season in the Champions League, starting in all six group games. He also walked away with a league winners medal for his contributions and it will be hoped Phillips can have a similar impact in Glasgow.

The former VfB Stuttgart and Bournemouth loanee is said to have held positive talks with Hoops’ gaffer Brendan Rodgers when he travelled to Glasgow on Wednesday and is ‘excited’ about the move. One imagines it won’t be long before this deal is completed and Phillips becomes Celtic’s eighth summer signing.
