Brendan Rodgers has revealed the thinking behind his decision not to start Callum McGregor against Rangers at Ibrox this afternoon.

With many Celtic supporters hopeful that McGregor would start the Glasgow derby, some fans were left disappointed at the decision to name him on the bench.

However, in all honesty, if McGregor was even at 80%, he likely would have started the game, so not many could have any complaints about the decision.

Rodgers said: [Celtic TV], “It was just a logical decision. He’s recovered very, very well. He’s not quite at the physical level that you need to be in this game, but he’ll play a part. It’s great to have his influence back and know that at some part in the game, if we need him, he’s there.”

McGregor will play a big part off the bench regardless of the score, with his experience in Glasgow derbies second to none.

Historically, he has had the edge over Rangers over the years.

But McGregor’s absence provides Tomoki Iwata with an opportunity, with the Japanese midfielder starting the game, presenting him with a huge chance to show that he is up to the standards required.
