In a concerning revelation, Ian Maxwell, the Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association, has shed light on the distressing experiences faced by one of Scotland’s most prominent referees. [RecordSport] Highlighting the toxic backlash against the introduction of VAR, Maxwell expressed his dismay at the targeted abuse aimed at match officials.

Maxwell’s comments revealed the distressing incidents that have marred the lives of referees in recent times. The unnamed referee had become the target of vile individuals who have crossed the line of decency. Such abhorrent acts include a distressing chase through a high street store and the despicable act of finding human excrement at the doorstep of the referee’s family home. It’s incredibly depressing stuff.

Recognising the immense pressure faced by match officials, Maxwell emphasises the need for unity and support within the footballing community.

You can disagree with decisions and call out blatant mistakes, but when people go as far as trying to chase them through shops or coming to their door, it’s shocking and cannot be accepted.

Referees haven’t covered themselves in glory this season with the introduction of VAR and that has to be addressed. As does the transparency of decisions!

We need to help build a culture where referee’s decisions can be scrutinised in a healthy way and they can explain their decisions as well as face the music if they get something badly wrong.

Fans deserve better and the hard working honest referees deserve better.
