Former Celtic striker Simon Donnelly has jumped to the defence of Hoops gaffer Brendan Rodgers.

The Irishman has received criticism throughout the season for his style of play and for causing his side to drop needless Scottish Premiership points, but Donnelly thinks that will all go out the window if the Bhoys win the league.

It is a big if, but a win tomorrow against Rangers would all but seal the title. Glasgow derbies are never easy but at Parkhead with no away fans, the Celts have a slight advantage.

They know what they need to do and across two spells as Celtic gaffer, Rodgers’ record against the Ibrox club is admirable.

He knows how to get the better of the Gers and ahead of this weekend, Donnelly has defended the double-treble-wining boss.

He said: [Clyde 1 Superscoreboard via Football Scotland] “Brendan Rodgers has received a bit of stick throughout the season on the back of two really successful seasons under Ange, his team’s been criticised and their style of play. But they’re three points ahead.

“Regardless of winning on goal difference or by one point, it’ll go down in history and it’ll be the same if Rangers win it (the league).

“We’ll not be here quibbling over dropped points here, there and everywhere. ‘We were leading by seven points then they were leading it’, it’ll be who wins the title.”

By tomorrow afternoon, we will have a better picture of where things lie in the title race.

At the minute, it is all ifs, buts, and maybes although the Hoops know that coming through victorious in the last league derby of the campaign means they will all but wrap up three-in-a-row.
