It’s not often you read anything by Charlie Nicholas which is encouraging from a Celtic perspective but the Sky Sports pundit has come out and urged the club to snap up Brentford’s Ollie Watkins before Premier League clubs come calling.

Watkins, 24, can play as a striker or on the left side of a front attacking three and has scored 17 goals in the Championship this term so far.

Nicholas believes Watkins could be the long term successor for Odsonne Edouard and while the player might cost a bit off the bat – it would be priceless if the player was the catalyst for nine in a row.

Nicholas told SunSport:

“I have watched a lot of this boy and he gets better and better every time I see him.

“The Englishman has scored 17 goals in 26 Championship games this season and can also play wide on the left.

“Brentford know he is going to be a top player. I’m not sure what his exact value is but it will be a lot more when the EPL clubs start to come in.

“At that point Celtic would have to forget him but they have a chance of nicking him this month for £10-12million.”

“Is that such a big price to pay if he helps see off Rangers in the title race?”

Celtic are currently in the market for a striker who can help Edouard up front and potentially replace the Frenchman when he decides to move on. Much like Celtic did with Eddy when Moussa Dembele’s time came.

Nicholas can speak from some authority as he’s watched the player on more than one occasion but it doesn’t appear as if Watkins is on Celtic’s radar at the moment.

Celtic are hoping to do business before they get back to action later in January.

  1. Already valued at £20+ with Sheffield Utd and Cyrstal Palace showing their interest, plus we’re 3rd in the Championship and don’t need to sell, so very unlikely to happen.
