Steve Clarke has dismissed any suggestion he’s held talks to become the next Celtic manager and the speculation surrounding him just proves he and his Scotland players have been doing a good job.

Clarke will take his country to their first major tournament in over two decades when the Tartan Army play in the Euro’s this summer.

The former Kilmarnock boss has been linked with the Celtic job but if there’s any truth to the rumours, Clarke isn’t giving anything away.

“I’m definitely not in talks because I’m under contract with the Scottish FA and looking forward to the Euros in the summer.” Clarke told SunSport.

“Speculation tells me that my players have done well for me. It tells me my staff have done well. Nobody speculates if you’ve done a bad job.

“As I sit here now, if somebody had told me that I was going to lead Scotland to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and I’d be there as the Scotland head coach, I’d be delighted with that.”

The Hoops are looking to replace Neil Lennon with not just a manager but a sporting director who will oversee the club’s whole football operation. It’s clear the Sporting director role should be filled first before a manager comes in because they should have a huge say in who the next manager should be.

This season has been an unmitigated disaster but we must make sure the next managerial appointment is the right one. Could Clarke be the man after the Euro’s? It would be a gamble, he wouldn’t have a lot of time to make changes to the team.
