As transfer sagas go, it summed up our season and probably continues to do so.

The failure to bring in a centre-back in January was a dereliction of duty on the recruitment side of things.

The club thought they had Preston’s Ben Davies only for a bizarre move by the outgoing English Champions. Liverpool hit some sort of panic button and quickly made a deal for the player when Celtic were waiting on the contract being signed.

Granted, it didn’t look like Celtic would pay the money to get the Englishman in January but we would be awaiting his arrival this summer.

Instead, the defender joined Liverpool and well, it’s probably been great for his bank balance but that’s about it.

Ben is yet to play for the Reds, named on the bench for just three of the eight games he has been available for.

The Lancashire post writes: Although no one expected a player with no Premier League experience to walk into the Liverpool side, for him not to have set foot on the pitch in five weeks is strange.

All the more so because of the number of defenders who are missing from Jurgen Klopp’s squad at the moment.

Klopp has played midfielders in the back four as he has chopped and changed to try and fill the gaps.

It’s astonishing Celtic were even gazumped in the first place. Sky Sports were so confident Davies was a Celtic player, they confirmed it.

Ultimately, Davies took a massive punt and it looks like it’s not going to happen.

Will Celtic recruiters try again this summer?
