Former Hearts midfielder and pundit Michael Stewart has claimed Celtic blew it last summer when they let Craig Gordon go for nothing instead of retaining the goalkeeper’s services.

At the time, Celtic allowed themselves to be strung along by Fraser Forster who the club thought was coming back for another loan spell with Moi Elyounoussi.

By the time Celtic found out Fraser had decided to stay at Southampton – Craig was already on his way to Hearts.

Neil Lennon then brought in Vasilis Barkas to replace both keepers. It’s not worked out at all.

Celtic take on Hearts in the late Saturday night kick off where Gordon will lead the Jambos out as captain.

The Hoops are still trying to figure out who’s going to be their number one for this season.

Ange postecoglou will start with Scott Bain in goals for the beginning of the SPFL campaign. Stewart believes if the club had offered Gordon a fair deal – he’d still be our number one.

‘Put simply, they blew it when they chose not to offer him a contract last year. Let’s face it, it’s not as if the big man would have been that difficult to deal with.’ Stewart wrote in his SunSport column.

‘It wouldn’t have cost the earth to keep him. But instead they were content to let him walk — and spend big on Vasilis Barkas instead.

‘I’ll let you do the maths on that one. And their loss has gone on to become Hearts’ gain.

‘Gordon will face his old club on the back of 11 clean sheets for the Jambos.’

There’s been talk of Joe Hart coming into the club, but right now, everything is up in the air.

Celtic fans are hoping the team can pull off a victory at one of the toughest away days on the SPFL calendar.
