As Celtic navigates through a very close title race, the debate over the team’s best starting lineup continues to stir among the support.

One of the most discussed topics has been the left-back position, currently occupied by Alexandro Bernabei in the absence of the injured Greg Taylor. While Bernabei has shown flashes of potential, a deeper analysis suggests that Taylor’s return could significantly bolster Celtic’s defensive solidity and tactical flexibility.

Greg Taylor, with his experience and understanding of Celtic’s defensive system, offers a level of stability and tactical awareness that Bernabei has struggled to match.

Taylor’s ability to read the game, position himself effectively, and make crucial interventions has been a key component for Celtic. His consistent performance over the seasons has earned him a spot as a reliable defender who seldom compromises the team’s defensive structure for offensive forays.

While both players contribute to the team’s offensive play, Taylor’s understanding with his teammates and his ability to support the attack with measured crosses and passes has been more evident. His synergy with the midfield and forwards, developed through seasons of playing together, enhances Celtic’s fluidity in attack, making him an integral part of both defensive and offensive phases of play.

Beyond his on-field contributions, Taylor brings leadership and a wealth of experience to the team. Celtic captain Callum McGregor told CeltsAreHere earlier this campaign that Greg is a big influence in the dressing room. He has been part of a treble winning side and while he’s not having as good a season as last, he still has the number one left back spot.

While Bernabei has not been outright poor in his performances, the argument for Taylor’s reinstatement does not rest on Bernabei’s failures but rather on Taylor’s proven track record. Football is a game of fine margins, and at a club like Celtic, where expectations are sky-high, the preference often leans towards players who have consistently demonstrated their ability to meet these demands.

As Taylor nears full fitness, the case for his return to the starting lineup becomes increasingly compelling, despite whispers from some quarters that Alexandro should stay in the role.

  1. Taylor has been ok. No more than that.

Pretty damning is that currently we have Welsh & Ralston being selected in our back four.
2 mediocre players who had previously unsuccessful loan spells at lower level Scottish clubs.

Ralston, admittedly, had a good season in Ange’s 1st season but IMO highlights just what a poor team we have now compared to the Invincibles in Brendan’s first season.

The squad is full of average players led by a captain who lacks Broonie’s leadership qualities and isn’t capable of dominating the middle of the park.

Should have offered Aberdeen £6m for Miovski but instead went for the cheap option of Idah who has shown he can take penalties but not much else so far.

Hopefully Joe Hart can keep up his outstanding form (why is there no new contract?) and CCV is back soon but if we fail to retain our title its entirely self-inflicted.

The January transfer window may haunt the club for years to come.

  2. Bernabei is a better player than Taylor by a million miles, if Ego Trip BR were to help Bernabei with his defensive stature then we have a better left back. Personally, I’d play Scales at left back, Lagerb had never had a chance, he is better than Roki and Scales at centre back. Welsh is a good stand-in.
