It seems a lifetime ago Virgil van Dijk was playing for Celtic. The Dutchman has come a long way since members of the Scottish media adamant the defender wasn’t worth £10m.

Celtic sold the player for £12m and Southampton got £75m for the Dutchman who is now considered one of the best defenders on the planet.

When Virgil played for Celtic he was a Rolls Royce of a player – often playing with a cigar in his mouth. His rise to the top was inevitable and Celtic fans have watched their opinions be vindicated since the player got the kudos he deserved down south.

Now a Champions League winner and chasing the Premier League title, Virgil has not forgotten the two years he spent at Celtic and how it set him up for success.

Signed by Neil Lennon but also working under Ronny Deila – the Dutch international has to be regarded as one of the club’s biggest steals when we brought him in from Groningen for a little over £3m.

Speaking as a Liverpool player now – a Celtic fan has managed to capture the great words he had for Celtic for BeInSports.
