We need to think big this summer but we also need to think smart.

Yes, we must chase top talent from across Europe and bring them in to galvanise the side.

However, having lived through the Mowbray rebuild under Gordon Strachan, it’s safe to say we need a nucleus of players who can hit the ground running in the SPFL.

It means we should be going for less glamourous signings as well, players from the SPFL who know the league and perform well in it for a side further down the table.

I don’t know what that looks like; Is it an Alan Campbell from Motherwell? Kevin Nisbett or Ryan Porteous from Hibernian or even a Joe Lewis from Aberdeen? That won’t be popular among a lot of the support who simply want the best from elsewhere. Look at the likes of Joe Lewis though who has kept the same amount of clean sheets as Alan McGregor in an Aberdeen side who face much more attacking threats than Celtic.

It all depends on who comes in from elsewhere but the balance has to be right.

Mowbray brought too many players in too fast from different leagues and it just didn’t gel.

Boxing clever has to be Celtic’s aim. I have no idea what way the club will go in that regard because we’ve still to be told who the next manager of the club will be.

Taking top SPFL talent, mixing them in with guys like Callum McGregor, James Forrest etc can only be a good thing.
